Today, we honor the life of a precious baby girl, Nova Joanne Smith, whose time on earth lasted just 21 hours.
Her life was heartbreakingly brief, but the love her family holds for her will last for all eternity.
Nova’s story begins with her mother, who carried her with hope, love, and dreams of the future.
But five days before Nova’s birth, her mother’s waters broke.
She went to the hospital, frightened yet hopeful, already 3 centimeters dilated.
To her shock, she was sent home.
When she returned again, still no intervention was made.
Twice, she was told to go home and wait.
Each day became heavier with fear.
Each moment felt longer, her instincts screaming that something was not right.
On the fifth day, silence replaced the fluttering movements that had once brought joy.
Her mother could no longer feel Nova move inside her.
Rushed back to the hospital, she endured moments of unbearable waiting as staff searched desperately for a heartbeat.
But hope was slipping away.
An emergency C-section was performed, and Nova was delivered.
Her body entered the world, but oxygen had been deprived for too long.
Tests showed high levels of gas in her blood, a sign of the suffering she had endured.
She was declared brain dead shortly after birth.
Her mother whispered words no parent should ever have to say: goodbye.
“I never got to see her eyes open. I never heard her cry,” her mother shared.
“She passed away at 21 hours old. I’m absolutely devastated. She is my Super Nova.”
Those 21 hours became an eternity of love.
Every touch, every kiss, every moment holding her fragile body was soaked in tears and tenderness.
